Welcome
Sustainable Matamata (formerly known as 'Transition Matamata') is a group of volunteers dedicated to helping Matamata-Piako communities to live more sustainably. We believe that using resources responsibly – so there’s enough to go around for generations to come – is common sense. We’re not about perfection; we’re about practical, simple steps that anyone can take.
Our volunteers come from all walks of life, united by a desire to be good ancestors to future generations. Some of us are deeply concerned about climate change. Others are motivated by reducing waste, working with nature or making social connections. Whatever brought you here, you’ll find a group of like-minded people taking part in projects that make an impact.
Ethos
We view sustainability as a whole system – everything is connected, and we’re all reliant on one another.
Sustainable living is about turning away from unsustainable practices and rebuilding a society that respects and protects the natural world. This means growing nutritious foods, reducing unnecessary waste and pollution, and becoming more self-sufficient. Most importantly, it means empowering local action: helping people who want to change but don’t know how, educating those who are curious, and mobilising our community for real, long-lasting change.
Vision
A thriving Matamata where sustainable living is the norm. We aspire to ensure resources are used responsibly, waste is minimised, our environment is protected, nature visibly thrives in and around our town, and everyone has what they need to flourish.
Mission
To empower Matamata residents to live more sustainably through education, practical support, and community action, while advocating for systemic change that protects our environment and builds local resilience.
Values
We believe in social responsibility, mutual support, and small, simple steps. We're here to educate, inspire, and facilitate behaviour change while also advocating with local, regional and national governments to encourage them to act and lead on sustainability. We stand for circularity, self-sufficiency and resilience, for us and for generations to come.
Sustainable Matamata sees Te Tiriti o Waitangi as this country’s foundational document and, in line with Te Tiriti, we respect the world view of Māori (Te Ao Māori) and the aspirations of local iwi.
