Predator-Free
Matamata

Sustainable Matamata administers the local Matamata branch of the nation-wide Predator-Free network, working to reduce damage to native biodiversity in the Matamata-Piako surrounds from imported predators such as rats, ferrets and more.

Despite central Government's cancellation of the national Predator-Free programme, many local branches have continued this difficult mahi through volunteers and donations.

Join a group of dedicated volunteers from Predator Free Matamata on their expeditions to the Kaimai Ranges in support of the predator control work being done up Te Tuhi track by Wairere Mahi and Ngāti Hinerangi.

Please note that this work requires a reasonable level of physical fitness but all safety gear (GPS and radio communications) is provided by Wairere Mahi.

Follow our Facebook page or sign-up for our newsletter to find out when the next group trip is happening.

To improve awareness and interest from future generations, we provide hands-on education to local students about predator trapping, native wildlife and conservation work.

If you would you like to request a trap-building or educational workshop, please contact us at predatorfree@sustainablematamata.org.nz

Look out for Martin and his traps at the local Matamata market days!
