Predator-Free

Sustainable Matamata administers the local Matamata branch of the Predator-Free programme, working to reduce damage to native biodiversity in the Matamata-Piako surrounds from imported predators such as rats, ferrets and more.

Despite central Government's cancellation of the national Predator-Free programme, many local branches have continued this difficult mahi through volunteers and donations.

Join a group of dedicated volunteers from Sustainable Matamata and Wairere Mahi (part of Ngāti Hinurangi) on their expeditions to the Kaimai Ranges.

Please note that this work requires a reasonable level of physical fitness and mobility, as it requires carrying heavy loads and walking narrow paths in all-weather conditions.

Follow our Facebook page or sign-up for our newsletter to find out when the next group trip is happening.

To improve awareness and interest from future generations, we provide hands-on education to local students about predator trapping, native wildlife and conservation work.

If you would you like to request a trap-building or educational workshop, please contact us at hello@sustainablematamata.org.nz.

Look out for Martin and his traps at the local Matamata market days!
