So much food, so many tonnes go to landfill unnecessarily

The news is out:

Bokashi composting is one way to prepare food scraps for enriching garden soil.

We are putting far too much organic stuff into our rubbish that goes to the Tirohia landfill, which is filling up faster than expected.

This may mean our district council will have to use another landfill (further away, at higher cost) years earlier than expected.

Surely it’s worth doing what we can to put off that evil day as long as possible?

In our district, people are chucking 19.1 tonnes a week of kitchen and green waste in the Matamata-Piako District Council red-lidded bins that get emptied into trucks and carted to landfill. That 19.1 tonnes is nearly half of the total kerbside rubbish, the council reports in its proposed Waste Management & Minimisation Plan.

The council is seeking feedback on this draft by 2 October; anyone can send their thoughts to the council – here – and Sustainable Matamata will be doing so.
